Billings Moratorium

PUBLIC AWARENESS: Medical Marijuana Crisis

On May 10th

Billings City Council Voted to place a 6 month moratorium on all Medical Marijuana businesses

In 2004 an initiative was placed on the Montana ballot to legalize medical marijuana.  All but a few dollars of the funding that was poured into advertising to sway us to vote in favor of this initiative, came from out of state.  An organization dedicated to the total legalization of marijuana, the Marijuana Policy Project, donated over $550,000 only $35 came from citizens in Montana.  They launched a huge, statewide campaign linking marijuana with compassion.  Not knowing that the active ingredient in Marijuana, THC, was already available by prescription and out of concern for those in chronic pain, Montanans voted for the initiative.  The Medical Marijuana law was enacted.  It came into our cities with few controls or regulations.  Licenses and patient cards are easy to obtain allowing almost anyone too grow, distribute and use marijuana.

OUR COMMUNITY AND OUR CHILDREN ARE AT RISK

Marijuana is a “GATEWAY” drug. Its effects have a negative impact on our community & our families.

HERE IS OUR CURRENT SITUATION:

  • Over 80 licenses have been issued in Billings to date.
  • There is little zoning regulation as to where these businesses can be located. They are showing up next to our schools, parks, places of worship and our homes.  You may already have one in your neighborhood.
  • In 2008 there were 1000 registered patients, today there are around 13,000 and that number grows daily.
  • Almost anyone can get a card.  Cards are even being issued to minors with parental permission.
  • Currently, it is legal for patients to “vaporize” (smoke marijuana) at the facility.  Leaving the clinic “high” puts everyone around them at risk and it is illegal.
  • Billings is now attracting medical marijuana users and providers from other states at an alarming rate.

WHAT CAN I DO?
